I’m in the landscape and the landscape is in me – On Duration residency – AADK/Spain 2025

I’m in the landscape and the landscape is in me.

On Duration Residency for durational and site-specific artistic practices. AADK/Spain 2025.

The program is founded and curated by performance artist Raegan Truax.

I’m in the landscape and the landscape is in me.
I climbed down into the valley and followed the dried out riverbed upstream.

What yesterday looked like lines from afar, have now become a labyrinthine space and I’m inside it. Vertical walls surround the narrow meandering path. Each bend is sculpted by the force of flowing water.

I take in this space and its inhabitants. Deafening sounds of the cicadas. Smell of pines and foxes. Traces of genet, wild boars, goats and snakes in the dried mud. I’m here and I feel like drawing!
With my walking stick, I make a drawing to navigate this space and make sense of the verticality, the width and the water’s overwhelming transformative force.

I draw in the rock, the sand, the mud. Continuing or braking the lines of the landscape, along and across the waves of the water.

The drawing is monumental in relation to my body (and is exhausting to make!) but in this vastness it’s very tiny, just like me. It merges with the traces of the other critters who traversed these lands.
Soon, when the next rain falls, it will be wiped out.

At the Edge II builds thematically on previous exhibition projects, where questions of place and identity, especially in relation to architecture and urban planning, were framed. At the Edge Part I was shown at Vermilion Sands in Copenhagen in the autumn of 2024. Part II is an extension of a first exhibition that will have a clearer connection to Malmö as a place and context. This series of exhibitions examine the role of the artist and the art space in urban transformations, while being situated in broader discussions about place, capitalism and identity, urban space, speculation and gentrification.

Reading, sacrifice and farewell ceremony revolving around the works They laughed (as if the void belonged to them) 2015-2025, by Jamila Drott

Jamila Drott’s metal works They laughed (as if the void belonged to them) came about during sporadic wanderings in the then (2015) partially abandoned track area between Nørrebro Station, Bispebjerg and Ryparken station. Found objects and traces of previous activities from the site were used as materials, tools and methods. Ten years later (2025) the two existing images were burnt and reemerged in the image in which they are now shown.

Sunday 13 April we gather to bid farewell and to dwell in the void. Please join us at the gallery at 15.00 (the exhibition At the Edge II is on view from 13.00) for a communal reading followed by a joint walk to the edge of town, where the final ceremony will take place. The reading and rite is facilitated by Jamila Drott.
